Dr. Albert Gaw, MD, DLFAPA was a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco, a board-certified psychiatrist, and a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Gaw is the first Asian American past speaker of the Assembly of the APA.
Dr. Gaw completed medical training at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay (UERM) Memorial Medical Center, Inc. in the Philippines. He interned at Rochester General Hospital, had his residency training in psychiatry at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y., and completed a fellowship at the Laboratory of Community Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gaw held appointments as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Community Health, Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston, MA; as Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA; as Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Director of Cross-Cultural Psychiatry, University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, MA; and as a Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gaw served as the Medical Director for Quality Management for Community Behavioral Health Service, City and County of San Francisco; the Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility at the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center; the Medfield State Hospital, Medfield, MA. and the Asian Community Mental Health Services, Oakland, CA. In addition, he was a staff psychiatrist at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA; Bedford Veterans Hospital, Bedford, MA; and the New England Medical Center Hospital, Boston, MA.
Dr. Gaw’s numerous publications include three books on cross-cultural psychiatry and two on psycho-spirituality.
Dr. Gaw’s honors and awards include the Burke Memorial Award; the Meritorious Service Award, Northern California Psychiatric Society; Kun-Po Soo Asian American Award and George Tarjan International Medical Graduate Award, American Psychiatric Association; and the Outstanding Alumni Award in Medical Education, UERM Medical Alumni Association.
